FOMO

Fear of Missing Out — the pressure someone feels when they perceive an opportunity is about to disappear. Triggered by scarcity, urgency, and social proof.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is the psychological pressure someone feels when they perceive an opportunity is about to disappear — because time is running out, stock is running out, or other people are claiming it first. It's the emotional driver behind most urgency and scarcity tactics in ecommerce.

FOMO works when it's real. Honest countdown timers, truly limited stock, and genuinely time-bound offers all lift conversion rate. Fake urgency (countdown timers that reset on refresh, "Only 3 left!" that never changes) initially works, gets exposed, and then destroys trust — which is more expensive than the short-term conversion lift ever earned.
