A lookalike audience is one the platform builds by finding users whose behavior resembles a seed list you upload — usually purchasers, high-LTV customers, or engaged email subscribers. A 1% lookalike is the most similar 1% of users in a country; a 10% lookalike is broader and less precise.

Lookalikes have lost some effectiveness in 2026 because platforms (especially Meta) lean more heavily on their own AI-driven audience construction inside Advantage+ campaigns. That said, lookalikes still win when: (1) you have a high-quality seed of 1,000+ customers, and (2) you're feeding the algorithm specifically valuable events (like repeat purchasers or top 10% LTV).

Seed quality matters more than seed size. A lookalike of your 500 best customers will consistently outperform one built on 10,000 all-time buyers.
