Fulfillment

Fulfillment

The end-to-end process of picking, packing, shipping, and delivering an order. In dropshipping, this is usually done by the supplier; in branded DTC, by a 3PL.

Fulfillment is the end-to-end process of turning an order into a package at a customer's door: receiving the order, picking the product from stock, packing it, labeling it, handing it to the carrier, and tracking it to delivery.

Dropshipping delegates fulfillment entirely to the supplier (AliExpress seller, CJ, agent). Branded ecommerce typically uses a 3PL or in-house warehouse. The transition between these two models — moving from supplier-fulfilled to 3PL-fulfilled — is one of the most important operational milestones in a store's growth, because it dramatically reduces shipping times and support-ticket volume.
