Above the Fold

The portion of a webpage visible without scrolling. The most valuable real estate on any page — 70-80% of visitors never scroll below it.

"Above the fold" refers to the portion of a webpage visible in the viewport before the visitor scrolls — a term borrowed from newspapers, where the top half of the front page was what readers saw before unfolding it.

On ecommerce PDPs, above the fold is where the hero image, price, CTA, and primary value prop live. Scroll-depth data consistently shows that 60-80% of PDP visitors never scroll past the second fold, so the above-the-fold composition is doing almost all the conversion work.

The desktop and mobile folds are different sizes — always check mobile first, since 70-85% of ecommerce traffic is mobile.
