Variant

A specific version of a product — size, color, material, capacity. One product can have many variants, each with its own SKU and inventory count.

A variant is a specific version of a product — a specific size, color, material, or other dimension. A single product listing with 3 colors and 4 sizes contains 12 variants, each with its own SKU, inventory count, and often its own image.

Variant strategy is an underrated conversion lever. Too many variants (30+ on one PDP) creates decision paralysis and lowers CVR. Too few (only one option when the category demands choice) creates abandonment. The sweet spot for most ecommerce products is 3-8 variants, with a clear recommended default.
